Winter Storm FAQ

If the power is out, should I call someone and let them know?

When the power is out, Longwood will work directly with Dominion Power to determine a timeline for restoration and will communicate with students. Please do not overwhelm Police Dispatch with calls about power outages, as they are prioritizing emergency situations. Residence hall staff are trained to help students in the event of a power outage.

If the power goes out, does Longwood-managed housing have generators?

Emergency generators will provide power to life and safety systems in the building, including fire alarms, sprinklers, and emergency exit lighting. Please be sure to keep your phones well charged and flashlights handy if the power does go out.

If the power is out, will my bathroom still work?

Yes. Toilets in Longwood-managed housing will still work because they operate using town water. There will likely be no hot water, however, until power is restored.

If my room gets cold, where can I warm up?

Willett Hall will be open as a warming station for the campus community. There will be few amenities in Willett, but it will be a warm place to sit comfortably, and bathrooms will be stocked.

If the power is out, how do I get into my residence hall?

If the power goes out, the key to your room will also work on the outside entrances to your residence hall.

If the power is out, how can I charge my phone?

Outlets will be available in Willett Hall for charging phones and laptops.

If the power is out, will Dorrill Dining Hall be open for me to eat?

Yes. Dorrill Dining Hall will operate on a brunch–dinner schedule. Because equipment will be running on generators, food options will be limited but available.

If I live in Lancer Park and can’t make it safely to campus, how will I have access to food?

Aramark staff will deliver food to the POD Market in Lancer Park. Students can pick up food using meal swipes. Options will be limited, but food will be available.

Who do I call if I have a problem?

Your first point of contact for non-emergencies is your Resident Assistant. Please do not overwhelm Police Dispatch with non-emergency calls.

What if I have a medical emergency when the power is out?

Call 911.

What if I need to contact the University Health Center and it’s closed?

A nurse advice line is available for non-emergent cases at 805-858-3117. If you have a life-threatening emergency, call 911.

Where can I get up-to-date information?

All information we send out will be posted at https://alerts.longwood.edu.
