Update Regarding Accidental Shooting

At approximately 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, the Farmville Police Department along with the Longwood Police Department responded to the 500 block of High Street following a 911 call. Upon arrival it was determined that Longwood student Jacob E. Richardson, 22, while showing a personally owned firearm to a friend, Kathleen N. Battle, 21, also a Longwood student, accidentally discharged the firearm causing a bullet wound to her leg. She was transported to Centra Southside Community Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Farmville police are handling the investigation. There is no ongoing threat.

Notice Regarding Accidental Shooting

Two Longwood students were involved in what appears to be an accidental shooting off campus Sunday night. The student who was injured was transported to Centra Southside Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There is no danger to any other students.  More details will be provided as soon as they are available.

Update on Saturday evening incident at Lancer Park

A Pittsylvania County man is behind bars on multiple charges related to a fatal shooting at Longwood University Saturday night (April 7, 2013). Darryl N. Elmore, 52, of Hurt, Va., is being held without bond at the Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville, Va., on charges of voluntary manslaughter, reckless handling of a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

No students, faculty or staff involved in shooting at Lancer Park; person of interest in custody

Longwood University Police Chief Robert Beach has confirmed that a man was shot and killed Saturday evening in a fenced-off construction area at Lancer Park, a student residence complex located near the main campus. No Longwood students, faculty or staff were involved in the shooting, and there is no continuing danger, Beach said.

A second individual was taken into custody shortly after the shooting and is considered to be the only person of interest in the case, said Beach, adding that the call about the shooting came into the Longwood Police Department at approximately 7:45 p.m. The shooting occurred in a trailer on the construction site at Lancer Park, which is home to about 250 Longwood students. The Longwood Police Department and the Virginia State Police are conducting the investigation.

Delayed Opening Announcement

Due to hazardous weather conditions, Longwood University will open at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 25, 2013. Essential personnel should report as directed by their supervisors. Note: Registration for Time Ticket 3 will still open at 6 a.m. on Monday.

Tornado Drill Notice

Longwood’s public address/siren warning and text messaging system will be activated today at 9:45 a.m. as part of a statewide tornado drill.
